Family or Systemic Therapy

Therapeutic Approach and Treatment

The Therapeutic Process at Tranquilamente: Step by Step

The Family or Systemic Therapy treatment at Tranquilamente is designed as a confidential, safe, and judgment-free space where each family member finds the validation they need.

1. Evaluation and Initial Systemic Hypothesis

We dedicate the first sessions to listening to the family's narrative, understanding how each member experiences the difficulty, and creating a relational map (genogram) to identify underlying patterns.

2. Flexible Session Framework

Interventions do not always require the presence of the entire group. We combine whole-family sessions, sub-system interviews (only parents, only siblings), and individual interventions according to the needs of the process.

3. Restructuring of Dynamics and Clinical Prescriptions

Through communication dynamics, homework between sessions, and reflection exercises, we help the family practice new ways of relating, establish healthy boundaries, and make roles more flexible.

4. Teamwork and Clinical Intervision

The hallmark of Tranquilamente lies in our multidisciplinary work. The case is continuously analyzed by our team of psychiatrists and psychologists in weekly meetings, guaranteeing an objective, rigorous, and unbiased perspective.

5. Consolidation of Well-being and Relapse Prevention

We accompany the family until structural changes consolidate naturally, equipping you with autonomous resources to face future life challenges with serenity and cohesion.

Overview

What is Family or Systemic Therapy?

Family therapy or systemic family therapy is a mental health discipline aimed at understanding and resolving the difficulties that emerge within family relationships and significant emotional bonds. At the Tranquilamente clinic, we understand that no person lives in isolation: each individual is part of an ecosystem or "system" that directly influences their emotional and psychological balance.

From our clinical approach, we address the human being as an integrated whole. Relationships with attachment figures and environmental dynamics are as determining as individual factors when deciphering the origin of suffering. By way of analogy, no digestive specialist would evaluate a liver condition by isolating the liver from the rest of the organism; if the underlying cause were excessive alcohol consumption or a global metabolic failure, focusing solely on the organ would prevent stopping the deterioration. Similarly, we humans often express discomfort or become "sick" in response to tensions or imbalances within our family system.

To heal, it is essential to broaden our gaze and look at the whole picture. At Tranquilamente, we move away from rigid or purely mechanistic interventions. Our interdisciplinary team works in coordination, holding weekly clinical sessions where we share perspectives and cross-reference knowledge. This integrative and human vision allows us to decipher the enigma behind each symptom and guide families towards a state of calm, harmony, and sustainable well-being.

Main Symptoms

Signs that Systemic Family Therapy Can Help You

Discomfort in the family system rarely manifests in a single way. Usually, accumulated tensions express themselves through behaviors, emotions, or physical symptoms in one or more members of the group. If you identify with any of the following situations, systemic intervention may be the key to restoring balance:

  • Recurrent communication problems: Constant feeling of not being heard, discussions that escalate frequently, or the presence of punishing silences and emotional distance.
  • Presence of an "identified patient": When the family's suffering seems to focus on a single member (for example, a child with behavioral problems, anxiety, or school failure) acting as a reflection of the overall tension.
  • Difficulty managing crises or life changes: Emotional blockage in the face of events such as divorces, family losses, arrival of new children, adoptions, or empty nest syndrome.
  • Triangulation and cross-conflicts: Tendency to involve children or other family members in marital disagreements or disputes between adults.
  • Rigidity in family roles: Difficulty adapting rules and limits as children grow or members' needs change.
  • Somatizations and hypervigilance: Emergence of physical symptoms (headaches, insomnia, digestive discomfort) linked to the atmosphere of tension or stress at home.

Common Types

Modalities and Approaches in Family Therapy

At the Tranquilamente clinic, we adapt Systemic Therapy to the unique characteristics of each family system. Depending on the reason for consultation and home structure, we resort to various clinical methodologies:

  • Structural Family Therapy: Aimed at reordering hierarchies, strengthening intergenerational boundaries, and modifying dysfunctional alliances within the family core.
  • Strategic and Milan Systemic Therapy: Focused on identifying interaction loops that maintain the problem and proposing specific interventions to break repetitive patterns.
  • Narrative Family Therapy: Allows the family to externalize the problem, separating members' identity from the symptom and rewriting a shared story of overcoming and resources.
  • Intergenerational Therapy (Bowenion Approach): Analyzes the influence of the family tree (genogram) to understand how past conflicts impact present relationships.
  • Solution-Focused Systemic Therapy: A brief and pragmatic approach focusing attention on strengths, exceptions to the problem, and achievable short-term goals.
